To communicate with us, babies use their body language, facial expressions, noises, cries and gestures. From a very young age, our children can tell us a lot more than you would believe. Can you imagine your baby telling you ‘I want more milk’, or ‘I’m in pain’ with out uttering a word?
Baby Sign Language is all about using simple gestures with your hearing child to allow you to communicate long before they have mastered the intricacies of speech. Sign language for infants lets babies as young as six months old communicate their needs so they do not have to cry. Your baby will learn how to tell you:
- If they are hungry, want more, or are all done
- If they are feeling hot or cold
- When they want their favourite toy
- Or if they just want a hug
Through sign language, you can provide what your baby wants without the emotional stress of hearing your baby crying, a mutually beneficial gesture for you and your growing child.
Baby sign language also strengthens the bond between you and your baby. Toddler sign language allows them to be understood and share moments more meaningfully with you. Do not miss the first time they sign ‘mommy’ or ‘daddy’, or their gesture of excitement at seeing a butterfly or a puppy.
Furthermore, babies sign language has great developmental advantages. Studies show that babies who sign tend to speak earlier and have a wider vocabulary, get better grades in school and have a higher IQ.
